What does “A New Type of Tough” mean to you?
“A new type of tough” is about redefining what toughness really means. It’s not pretending pain doesn’t exist but rather acknowledging it and learning how to live with it. Real toughness isn’t doing everything alone or bottling things up; it’s having the strength to ask for help, accept it, and keep moving forward. It’s a different kind of tough, one that is honest and resilient.

Meet Huy
Hi, my name is Huy Vu. Full time professional Dad, part time investor, and extremely part time baseball coach. My wife, Sarah Beth, and I are the proud founders of two amazing boys with the very traditional Vietnamese names of Parker and Quinlan.
Before my current life of carpools and baseball practices, I spent 25+ years in corporate bond sales and trading in New York and Charlotte with Salomon Brothers, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and eventually founded the SMBC Nikko Charlotte office.
My parents came to the U.S. from Saigon, and I grew up in its sister city — Oklahoma City. I’m the first “Vu” born on American soil, and my parents made sure I understood that distinction comes with great stewardship, and that kindness and generosity aren’t optional. I’ve been trying to pay that forward ever since.
When I’m not fishing with the boys or serving on boards, I’m collecting anything shiny or interesting from historical artifacts, art, sneakers…basically whatever sparks joy or confusion. We love hosting dinner parties packed with laughter, trivia, and music from the “golden oldies,” otherwise known as the early 2000s.
What was the first concert you attended?
My first concert was Steve Miller at the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheatre back in the late 1900s (nineteen hundred and eighty nine, to be exact).
Who is your favorite rock star?
And for the record, the greatest rock band of all time is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I will happily throw hands with anyone who disagrees.
