What does a New Type of Tough mean to you?
To me, a New Type of Tough means having the courage to face difficult things with strength, optimism, and humility. It isn’t simply about being tough enough to endure adversity—it is about being willing to show up, support others, adapt when circumstances change, and keep moving forward. In cancer care and in life, I believe the greatest toughness is often demonstrated through compassion, resilience, and the willingness to stand beside someone when they need it most.

Meet Matt
I am a Clinical Physician Executive with Novant Health Gynecologic Oncology and Novant Health Cancer Institute, where I spend my professional life caring for women with gynecologic cancers and working to improve the delivery of cancer care. I am passionate about combining excellent clinical care with compassionate leadership and helping patients and families navigate some of the most difficult moments in their lives.
I received my medical training at Wake Forest University and completed my residency and fellowship training at Atrium Health and University of Kentucky, respectively. I have spent my career in gynecologic oncology, with a particular interest in complex cancer surgery, innovative cancer treatments, and developing strong teams focused on delivering outstanding patient care.
What was the first concert you attended?
R.E.M.’s Orange Crush Tour, with Drivin’ N Cryin’ as the opener, held at the “Charlotte Hornets Coliseum”
Who is your favorite rock star?
Bruce Springsteen. I’ve always admired his ability to tell stories through music and connect with people from all walks of life.
