Suicide is one of the hardest topics to talk about—and one of the most urgent. The Calm and the Storm, a new documentary from writer and producer Matt Simon, aims to break the silence by confronting the realities of suicide while pointing viewers toward hope, healing, and real-world solutions. The film brings together storytellers, advocates, and organizations committed to saving lives.
Inspired by both personal experience and years working in behavioral health, Matt Simon, COO at New Hope Treatment Centers says “the goal was never just to show how bad the problem is, but to show what can be done and to reach people hearts. The film highlights sobering realities—suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people, and many who struggle never seek help—but it also challenges the idea that nothing works.
A key partner in the project is Mission34, represented by MJ Gallagher. Mission34 became involved through its focus on community-based prevention and support, aligning with the film’s mission to move from awareness to action. “Together, they emphasize practical resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and organizations such as NAMI, which provide education, support, and connection for individuals and families” says Gallagher.
Young people are a central focus of the project. With social pressure, isolation, and anxiety at historic highs, The Calm and the Storm make space for honest conversations about what today’s youth are facing—and how adults, communities, and peers can respond with compassion and vigilance.
Simon says, “hope doesn’t come from pretending the storm isn’t real—it comes from showing people that help exists, that connection is possible, and that their life truly matters.”
Ultimately, The Calm and the Storm is about turning the tide—replacing stigma with understanding and despair with direction. Those who want to support or get involved can learn more, share the film, and access resources at THE CALM AND THE STORM. One conversation can save a life.
